Anyone who is going to take out new credit cannot gamble, says Durigan

Minister of Finance states that the use of betting compromises income and can affect consumption and debt

The Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, said this Monday (May 4, 2026) that people who take out new credit should not use the resources for sports betting, known as bets.

According to him, studies indicate that the use of these platforms compromises family income and has an impact on consumption, especially in retail.

Durigan made the statement in an interview with GloboNews. He stated that analyzes by the Central Bank, academia and the Ministry of Finance itself show that there is a significant commitment to income from gaming, including in scenarios with the lowest estimated impact.

The minister said that the government seeks to encourage a more sustainable credit model, with a lower risk of default. According to him, people who are already in debt and resort to new lines of credit for renegotiation need to avoid directing resources to betting.

He stated that the objective is to preserve disposable income for essential consumption and debt payment. Durigan stated that there is a clear difference between the level of personal debt and the impact of betting on consumption. “Even with variations in studies, there is a consensus that betting affects family budgets”.
