The Chamber’s Ethics Council approved this Tuesday (5) the suspension for 60 days of deputies Marcos Pollon (PL-MS) and (Novo-RS) under the presidency of (-PB) in August 2025. The case of Zé Trovão (PL-SC) is also analyzed.
The opinion of deputy Moses Rodrigues (União Brasil-CE) provides for the suspension of the three for two months. He presented a joint vote, but cases are analyzed individually. The suggestion of punishment for Pollon and van Hattem was approved by 13 votes in favor and 4 against.
The punished parliamentarians have already stated that they will appeal to the CCJ (Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Commission). If the measure is rejected, they can also appeal to the plenary.
In their last speech before the votes, Zé Trovão and Van Hattem stated that they would repeat the occupation, while Pollon said that the sanction would be a “medal” for them. “If it is necessary to take the Board again at some point in history to defend whoever elected me, I will do so”, declared the deputy from Santa Catarina. “If necessary, we will do it as many times as necessary”, added the gaucho.
The analysis at the Ethics Council began at around 1:30 pm and lasted around nine hours. There was discussion between deputies during the session, and the right tried to postpone the vote. The leader of the opposition in the Chamber, Cabo Gilberto Silva (PL-PB), twice told the president of the Ethics Council, Fábio Schiochet (União Brasil-SC), that the decision could not be made with the possibility of a remote vote.
The session was also marked by criticism of Motta, especially after the end of the plenary discussions while the collegial analysis was taking place. The gesture was interpreted by the opposition as an attempt to push for a vote in the Ethics Council.
The leader of the PL in the Chamber, (RJ), stated that the process against the Bolsonarists only went ahead due to the “desire” and “revanchism” of the President of the House and asked him to stop acting “with his liver”.
“Do you want to be exposed at this level with the plenary of the House? Because we are going to the last consequences. A phone call from your excellency and everything would be resolved, we wouldn’t need to go through all this stress. But, if this satisfies your excellency’s ego, I want, as leader of the PL, to regret it because it is not the Hugo Motta that I know”, he stated.
Marcos Pollon was the target of two representations on the council. The first was because of a speech at a demonstration in Mato Grosso do Sul, in August, when he cursed Motta and referred to the mayor as “short at 1.60m”. The Bolsonarista complained about the delay of the head of the House in scheduling amnesty for those convicted of attempted coups.
Shortly afterwards, he participated in the riot that occupied the Board of Directors of the Chamber, making voting impossible for almost two days. At the time, right-wing deputies remained in the plenary, preventing Motta from sitting in the presidential chair. Pollon took the place of head of the House, along with van Hattem and Zé Trovão.
In this Tuesday’s session, the deputy from Mato Grosso do Sul said that the occupation was “an act of desperation” after Motta, according to him, broke agreements with the opposition to arrange the amnesty. The congressman also said that those involved in the riot were promised that “there would be no persecution and retaliation” after the episode.
Pollon also declared that the representation against him was motivated by his speeches criticizing the president of the Chamber and asked the council not to punish the other two colleagues. “I recommend that, if we are suspended, you print this decision on cardboard and place it in your living room, so that everyone who passes by knows that you stood up to fight,” he said.
The Parliamentary Internal Affairs Office recommended the suspension of the deputies’ mandate for 30 days. At the time, Motta even threatened a six-month suspension.
The representation was presented by deputy Gilberto Abramo (Republicanos-SP), a supporter of the president of the Chamber. The complaint about the demonstration was made by deputies (-RJ), Pedro Campos (PSB-PE) and Talíria Petrone (PSOL-RJ).
At the Ethics Council, Zé Trovão cried when speaking, saying that his office employees would spend two months without receiving salaries. He then attacked the (Federal Supreme Court) and stated that his colleagues were committing an injustice.
Marcel van Hattem’s defense, made by lawyer and pre-candidate Jeffrey Chiquini (Novo), denied that the deputy sat in Motta’s chair or prevented the start of the session.
The deputy stated that the process is an attempt to silence the opposition and compared the case with the trial of those convicted of the coup acts of January 8th. Pre-candidate for , he reinforced that, if elected to the House, he will work to approve the impeachment of STF ministers.
REMEMBER THE EPISODE
The Bolsonaro riot in reaction to that of the former president () made the House’s plenary session unfeasible for 30 hours. On that occasion, opposition parliamentarians prevented sessions from being held.
In a rotating scheme, they were isolated by the Legislative Police, with only parliamentarians allowed entry. With the riot, the Bolsonaro supporters called for an amnesty for Bolsonaro and the participants of the 8th of January, in addition to the impeachment of the STF minister.
In December, they achieved a partial victory with the approval of the dosimetry project. The proposal replaced the amnesty and promoted the reduction of sentences for those convicted. The president (PT) vetoed the project, but Congress overturned the veto last week.
