US authorizes fruit-flavored electronic cigarettes for the first time

FDA cleared 4 Glas Inc. products, with mango, blueberry and menthol flavors, after pressure on the Trump administration

The FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) authorized, on Tuesday (May 5, 2026), for the first time, the marketing of fruit-flavored electronic cigarettes aimed at adult smokers. The decision marks a policy change that comes amid months of pressure from the vaping industry on President Donald Trump (Republican Party), according to the news agency .

The entity granted authorization for e-cigarettes with flavors of mango, blueberry and two varieties of menthol to Los Angeles-based vaping company Glas Inc. Until then, the FDA had only granted permission for tobacco- or menthol-flavored vaping products.

Vaping companies argue that their products can help reduce the impact of smoking among adults. The disease is responsible for 480,000 deaths annually in the United States due to cancer, as well as lung and heart disease.

As a presidential candidate, Trump promised to save vaping and won support from e-cigarette companies, store owners and vaping enthusiasts.

During the administration (2021–2025) of President Joe Biden (Democratic Party), the FDA denied more than 1 million requests to market candy or fruit-flavored products. The move was part of a broader crackdown that has helped reduce teen vaping after a spike in 2019.

In his first administration (2017-2021), Trump implemented the first flavor restrictions on electronic cigarettes. He also raised the purchasing age for all tobacco products from 18 to 21.

Age verification and monitoring

The FDA has suggested that the company’s digital age verification system makes it unlikely that products will be purchased by minors. Users must first verify their age with a government ID on their cell phone. E-cigarettes can only be used when connected via Bluetooth to the verified phone.
