Older than Stonehenge: Sunken structures on an artificial island become visible

If you walk by lakes in Ireland, Scotland or Wales, you can sometimes discover strange little islands that look a little too regular to be natural. The impression is not deceptive: these are artificially created and very old structures. They are called crannogs, there are over 1,000 of them in Ireland alone, and at least a few hundred in Scotland and Wales.
