5.3 million years ago, one of the most powerful flood events in Earth’s history occurred. Today’s Mediterranean area looked completely different back then: the Mediterranean had largely dried out, and in the course of this so-called Messinian salinity crisis, miles of salt had been deposited. In the 1970s, these huge salt deposits were found during drilling in the Mediterranean bed.
