Performances generated by artificial intelligence (AI) will not be able to compete for the Golden Globe, according to new rules released this week by the award organization. The update formalizes limits on the use of the technology in film and television productions amid growing pressure from Hollywood for clearer rules on AI.
The new guidelines do not automatically eliminate films and series that use artificial intelligence tools. According to the organizers, works with partial use of technology will continue to be eligible, as long as human participation remains predominant in the final result.
“Applications in which an interpretation is substantially generated or created by artificial intelligence are ineligible,” states the document released by the awards, which traditionally marks the beginning of Hollywood’s major awards season.

The Golden Globe also stated that it will continue to accept productions with partial use of artificial intelligence at different stages of the creative process, as long as “human creative direction, artistic judgment and authorship prevail”.

The debate about artificial intelligence gained momentum in Hollywood during the actor and screenwriter strikes that paralyzed the industry in 2023. At the time, unions pressured studios for clearer limits on the use of voice cloning, digital image reproduction and automated creation of performances.
During negotiations that year, SAG-AFTRA union president Fran Drescher stated that artificial intelligence “cannot replace human performers.”
The discussion returned to the center of the sector recently after the announcement of the western film As Deep as the Grave, which will feature a digital version of actor Val Kilmer created by artificial intelligence. The actor, who died in 2025, will appear in the production with permission from his family, who authorized the use of his visual archive for digital reconstruction of the character.

According to the new guidelines adopted by the Golden Globes and the Oscars, artificial intelligence will continue to be accepted in productions only as a technical and creative support tool, without replacing the central role of actors, screenwriters and other human professionals in competing works.
