In his first speech in Parliament, the new prime minister stated that he will ‘serve’ the country and not ‘reign’ over the Hungarians
Peter Magyar clear winner of the April elections, was officially elected this Saturday (9) new prime minister of Hungaryin a journey that ended the long cycle marked by the leadership of nationalist Viktor Orbán.
In his first speech before the Hungarian Parliament as Prime Minister, Magyar promised to “serve” the country, not “reign” over it.
“I will not reign in Hungary, but I will serve my country. I will serve it as long as my services are useful and the nation needs it,” he declared.
Magyar also highlighted that “millions of people chose to change” in Hungary, after 16 years of Orbán as prime minister.
From Brussels, the president of the European Commission (executive arm of the EU), Ursula von der Leyen — who had a tense relationship with Orbán — congratulated the new prime minister.
“Our hearts are in Budapest. Hope and the promise of renewal are a powerful sign in these difficult times. We have important work ahead of us,” he said.
In turn, the President of the European Council, António Costa, welcomed “a new chapter in the history of Hungary”.
