Brazilian has a scare while climbing Everest: ‘If I had stayed five minutes behind, it would have hit us’

The climber reported that, after passing through a place during the ascent, a serac (large block of ice) fell apart and hit other climbers, who were injured.

Brazilian Gustavo Cordoni had a big scare during a climbing Mount Everest. The climber reported that, after passing through a place during the ascent, a serac (large block of ice) fell apart and hit other climbers, who were injured. No one died, according to him.

“We saw a serac fall in front of us; if it had stayed five minutes behind, it would have hit us”, says the climber.

Incident happened before field 1a place where climbers stop to rest, located at 6,065 meters above sea level, at the top of the feared Khumbu Icefall. Gustavo says it took seven hours to get to the location.

He reports that the expedition is part of an acclimatization process to the mountain, before being released so he can climb to the summit.
