For the first time, the EU has politically agreed on sanctions against violent Israeli settlers and representatives of Hamas. The breakthrough was brought by the new Hungarian government.
The foreign ministers of the EU member states reached a political agreement on Monday to impose sanctions on Israeli settlers for the violence committed against Palestinians in the West Bank. This was announced by the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallasová. According to her, they also agreed on new sanctions against representatives of the Palestinian militant movement Hamas, writes TASR.
- EU foreign ministers agreed on sanctions against Israeli settlers.
- The new Hungarian government stopped blocking the sanctions, thereby unblocking the European agreement.
- The European Union is also preparing sanctions against representatives of the Palestinian movement Hamas.
The agreement was made possible by the entry of the new Hungarian government, which announced that it would not prevent the adoption of measures against violent Israeli settlers, as the cabinet of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has repeatedly done. Kallasová already expected before the ministerial meeting in Brussels that the heads of diplomacy would agree to this.
Sanctions for violence
“It was high time to break the deadlock and move to action. Extremism and violence have consequences,” she said on the X Network.
According to the media, EU officials have already stated that the Union plans to include seven settlers or settler organizations on the sanctions list. At the same time, he is going to impose sanctions on Hamas officials.
Limited support in the EU
However, according to Politico magazine, Kallas admitted that there is currently insufficient support in the EU for broader measures against Israel.
