The EU believes in a turnaround in the war in Ukraine. Kallas reports a weakening Putin and promises security guarantees

Developments in the Russian-Ukrainian war are changing, Kyiv is in a significantly better position than it was a year ago. On Monday, after the ministerial meeting in Brussels, the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallasová, announced it. According to her, the European Union also continues to work on security guarantees for Ukraine after the establishment of a ceasefire. TASR informs about it.

  • Today, Kyiv is in a noticeably better position in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
  • The European Union is preparing security guarantees for Ukraine after the future ceasefire.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently in the weakest political position.

The EU’s security guarantees include strengthening the satellite center to be able to monitor the ceasefire, as well as measures against the circumvention of sanctions, Kallas said at a press conference.

The dynamics of war are changing

According to her, several events testify to the fact that the dynamics of the war, which was unleashed by Russia with its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, is changing. Specifically, she mentioned Ukrainian strikes deep in Russian territory, Russia’s record losses on the battlefield, or a limited military parade in Moscow during the celebration of the Soviet victory in World War II. According to Kallasova, Russian President Vladimir Putin is currently in a weaker position than ever before.

The EU has always supported the achievement of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. According to Kallasova, this is not possible without Russia accepting responsibility.

Ukraine and the EU

At the same time, the high representative stated that the integration process of Ukraine into the EU received a new impulse, which must be used. In this context, she advocated the opening of all negotiation clusters before the approaching summer.

“Our message to Putin is clear: Ukraine’s future in Europe is more important to us than Russia’s destruction of Ukraine,” she declared, adding that the country’s admission to the EU is not charity, but an investment in its own security.

New EU sanctions

EU foreign ministers on Monday approved the imposition of new sanctions on 16 individuals and seven entities in Russia “for the systematic illegal deportation” of Ukrainian children. Kallasová considers their abduction a deliberate attack on the future of Ukraine.

Kiev says around 20,000 children have been illegally sent to Russia and Belarus, where in some cases they are subjected to military training and forced to fight against their own country’s army.
