According to the former governor of Ceará, the official announcement will be made next Saturday (16)
The former governor of Ceará Ciro Gomes (PSDB) decided that will not run for President of the Republic in 2026. He, who has already contested the position in four elections, will run for the Ceará government.
According to Ciro’s press office, the official announcement will be made next Saturday (16). THE The invitation was made by the party president, Aécio Neves, on April 14.
The federal deputy stated that he received a call from Ciro informing him of the decision. According to the note released by Aécio, the PSDB will continue debating with Ciro and other alternative leaders at a time when “polarization and radicalism have been preventing the presentation of a consistent project”.
After the announcement last month, Ciro also said he was tired of national politics and that only considers the possibility in light of the seriousness of the country’s economic and institutional scenario.
In the context of criticism of the Judiciary – an agenda present in the speeches of almost all pre-candidates – Ciro said he was against the nomination of Jorge Messias, attorney general of the Union of Brazil, to the Supreme Court, for the vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso. The nomination was rejected this month.
This would be Ceará’s fifth candidacy for president of the Republic. The other four entries were in: 1998, 2002, 2018 and 2022.
Ciro was also governor of the state of Ceará between 1991 and 1994. In addition to being minister of two portfolios, in two different administrations. First, by occupying the Ministry of Finance in 1994, during the government of Itamar Franco, and also at the Ministry of National Integration, during Lula’s first term, between 2003 and 2006.
