Americans don’t think Trump explained war goals against Iran, survey says

Two in three Americans think President Donald Trump has not clearly explained why the country went to war with Iran, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll concluded on Monday, which also showed his approval rating rising from the lowest level of his term.

The four-day poll revealed deep concerns ‌about rising gas prices and also suggested that many voters are placing blame for their problems on Trump’s Republican allies, who will defend their majorities in Congress in November’s midterm elections.

More than two months into a conflict that began on February 28 with a U.S.-Israeli bombing campaign, 66% of poll respondents — including one in three Republicans and nearly all Democrats — said Trump had not “clearly explained the objectives of U.S. military involvement in Iran.”

For 63%, their household’s personal financial situation has been affected by recent gasoline price increases, compared to 55% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted March 17-19.

Now 36% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance, an increase of 2 percentage points since a Reuters/Ipsos poll in late April showed his approval rating was 34%, the lowest level of Trump’s current term.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, based on the number of people surveyed. The survey, conducted online and across the country, gathered responses from 1,254 North American adults.
