The protest by students at state universities in São Paulo, which took place this Monday (11), was interrupted after the arrival of councilors Rubinho Nunes and Adrilles Jorge, both from União Brasil, creating confusion among the protesters.
The confrontation occurred around 2:30 pm, when the councilors arrived at the protest, which would take place in República, a neighborhood in the central zone of São Paulo. There, Rubinho and Adrilles allegedly exchanged provocations with the protesters and, subsequently, began a direct confrontation.
Rubinho Nunes allegedly exchanged punches with students and left the scene with a broken nose, according to a statement given to the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. To the newspaper, the councilor denied having initiated the provocations. “I was talking at the scene, but the students started attacking with kicks, punches, pipes and even a cone was thrown”, he highlighted.
O InfoMoney questioned the councilor’s team about his current health status, but, so far, has not received a response.
Student strike
Students at state universities, especially the University of São Paulo, have been suspended since April 14th. The movement, which began in support of the mobilization of civil servants, demands adjustments to the Student Permanence and Training Support Program, which currently offers benefits of between R$335 for students living in student housing and R$885 for full assistance, in addition to improvements to facilities in general.
Among other points, students also criticize the management of the university restaurant, known as “bandejão”, student housing and the situation at the University Hospital (HU), which, according to protesters, has lost around 30% of its staff in the last decade.

USP proposed an adjustment to the benefit based on the IPC-Fipe index. In this way, the full aid would increase to R$912 per month, while the partial aid for students with housing would rise to R$340. The proposal, however, is considered insufficient by the students, who defend an adjustment to R$1,804, an amount equivalent to the minimum wage in São Paulo.
This Sunday (10), the Military Police removed the USP students who had occupied the rectory building since the 7th. According to the Central Student Directory (DCE), four university students were detained.
