Pellegrini asserts after the drone attack: We must change the law immediately, it is about the security of Slovakia!

Another incident of a drone attack near the eastern borders of Slovakia only confirms the urgency of the topic of preparing Slovak legislation so that the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic can effectively intervene against possible objects even in peacetimewhich may accidentally or purposefully cross our border. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini stated this in response to Wednesday’s (May 13) Russian attacks on western Ukraine. His opinion for TASR was provided by the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic.

  • The drone attack near Slovakia’s eastern borders revealed the state’s lack of legislative preparation.
  • Today, the armed forces of Slovakia cannot effectively intervene in peacetime.
  • President Peter Pellegrini demands an urgent change to the laws on air defense.
  • The Transcarpathian region experienced the most massive Russian drone attack since the beginning of the invasion.
  • After the attacks, Slovakia closed all border crossings with Ukraine as a precaution.

“Therefore, I firmly believe that the round table, which began in the Presidential Palace and continued at the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic, will convince political parties across the political spectrum that this topic is very urgent, and I firmly believe that the deputies will prepare a change in the legislation as soon as possible“, added the head of state.

The Zakarpattia region in western Ukraine faced the most massive Russian attack on Wednesday since the invasion began in February 2022. According to the data of the Ukrainian army, during the air attack, 11 unmanned aircraft of the Šahid and Geraň types flew into the airspace of Transcarpathia. Ukrainian air defense forces and electronic warfare were able to shoot down or knock out most of them.

The drones should have been intercepted in Ukrainian airspace only 50 kilometers from the Slovak border. SR in response to the attack for security reasons closed all border crossings on the border with Ukraine until further notice.
