João Fonseca will not compete in the ATP 500 in Hamburg – 05/16/2026 – Sport

João Fonseca, 19, withdrew this Saturday (16) from the ATP 500 in Hamburg, a tournament that starts this Sunday (17) in Germany.

In a post, the Brazilian tennis player, 29th in the world rankings, states that he felt pain in his right wrist and decided, with his team, not to participate in the competition. Fonseca would debut against German Yannick Hanfmann, number 59 in the world.

“Unfortunately I won’t be able to compete in Hamburg this year. I felt a slight discomfort in my right wrist and, together with my team, we decided that it would be best to withdraw from the tournament as a precaution. I would also like to thank the tournament for the support and hospitality since I arrived here in Hamburg.”

There are no further details about the severity of the injury or recovery time.

The tennis player’s next commitment is Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam of the season, which begins on May 24 in Paris. It will be the first time that Fonseca competes in the French tournament as seed.

After ending 2025 in 24th position in the world rankings, the Brazilian began the new season facing physical difficulties. He withdrew from participating in the Adelaide and Brisbane championships due to a chronic problem in his lower back and, with a performance below his usual level, he was eliminated in the debut of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam on the calendar, and the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires.

At the Rio Open, in February, he reached the round of 16 in singles, but was unable to get past Peruvian Ignacio Buse. In the doubles competition, he won the title alongside Brazilian Marcelo Melo.

Fonseca reached the round of 16 in Indian Wells, USA, and the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo and the ATP 500 in Munich. At the Masters 1000 in Madrid and Rome, he was defeated in his debut.
