USP creates method to map urban vulnerabilities in São Paulo

A USP (University of São Paulo) developed a methodology to map urban vulnerabilities from territorial data. The method makes it possible to identify regions more susceptible to problems such as energy supply failures, social inequalities, infrastructure deficiencies and impacts on public health.

As a result of the study, the researchers developed a unprecedented energy vulnerability map of the .

The study classified residential areas into four levels of vulnerability by crossing indicators such as tree density, proximity to hospitals, extension of areas served by substations and availability of alternative energy sources.

According to the researchers, the results indicate that energy vulnerability is not directly associated with income, but with the combination of . The methodology also allows you to simulate different scenarios, enabling impact assessment and risk prediction.

The methodology is already beginning to be considered in new larger scale projects.
