Meta is transferring around 7,000 employees to new roles linked to artificial intelligence, according to an internal statement, as part of a broad restructuring that includes staff cuts scheduled for the end of this week.
Employees will be reassigned to some of the new teams focused on AI products, including agents and applications, according to the memo sent Monday by Chief Human Resources Officer Janelle Gale, obtained by Bloomberg. The new organizational structure will be “leaner” and with “smaller teams,” Gale wrote.
“We are convinced that this will make us more productive and make work more rewarding,” he added.

Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has placed AI at the center of the company’s strategy, redirecting teams and resources to focus more directly on this emerging technology. The race to improve AI has become a key part of both end-user products and Zuckerberg’s long-term vision for Meta. The company is investing hundreds of billions of dollars in talent and infrastructure to develop large language models that support chatbots and other consumer features, in a bid to take on rivals such as Alphabet’s Google and OpenAI.
Meta has also been encouraging engineers to use AI agents to support programming tasks and other routines, and Zuckerberg himself is developing an AI version of himself to interact with employees.
The company had already informed its staff that it intends to cut 10% of employees this Wednesday — something around 8 thousand people — as part of an effort to gain efficiency and “offset” other investments in AI. According to the memo, employees in North America were instructed to work from home that day.
