The daughter of diplomats Mariana Tanaka Abdul Hak, aged 20, was on Saturday (16) in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro and died on Sunday (17) after failing to resist his injuries. The young woman graduated in Business Administration from ESCP Business School, on the Turin campus, in Italy.
Mariana’s parents were Ibrahim Abdul Hak Neto and Ana Patrícia Neves Abdul Hak. The father is a career diplomat and the current special advisor in the office of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). His mother holds the position of deputy consul of Brazil in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In addition to Portuguese, Mariana mastered English, Spanish and French. She had also lived in France, the United Kingdom, Venezuela, Lebanon and Belgium during her student life.
Marina worked as marketing director at an Italian company since January 2025. The organization was responsible for student recruitment, budget management and marketing campaigns.
She arrived in Rio de Janeiro on the same day of the accident to sign an employment contract with a multinational of the cosmetics sector and start your new day to day life in the city of Rio.
President Lula called Mariana’s father to see him this Tuesday (19th). “I called him this afternoon to express my solidarity with the passing of his beloved daughter Mariana Tanaka Abdul Hak,” said Lula.
What happened
The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police investigates the Mariana’s death who died the day after being run over in Ipanema, south zone of Rio. The young woman’s body will be transferred to São Paulo after being released on Monday (18), by the Rio Legal Medical Institute (IML).
In addition to her, her mother and a man whose identity was not disclosed were also injured. Both were treated at Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital and have already been discharged.
According to witnesses, the collision occurred when the driver of a van lost control of the vehicle when trying to avoid a cyclist and invaded the sidewalk on the corner of Vinicius de Moraes and Visconde de Pirajá streets. Mariana, who had arrived in Rio a few hours before the accident, was one of the pedestrians affected.
The wake and burial ceremonies should take place on Thursday (21).
