The agreement to end the war with Iran is said to be on the way. We have a fairly solid foundation, says Marco Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that an agreement to end the war with Iran could be reached today. “We thought we might have some news last (Sunday) night, maybe today, but I don’t want to overanalyze,” Rubio said in New Delhi. AFP informs about it, writes TASR.

“We have a fairly solid basis on the table, in my opinion, in terms of opening the strait and making it accessible,” he told reporters as he left the Indian capital, where he was on an official visit.

A possible agreement in the Persian Gulf

At the same time, Rubio added that the deal “has a lot of support in the Gulf. Every country that we’ve gone through this with understands that it’s not only a very sensible thing to do, it’s the right thing to do for the world.”

The head of US diplomacy is also confident that Iran will enter into “real, substantive, time-bound negotiations on the nuclear issue.”

Trump tempers expectations

Responding to US President Donald Trump tempering expectations on Sunday and saying he had instructed negotiators to “take their time” on a deal, Rubio said he was “not in a rush, he doesn’t want to make a bad deal, and the president won’t make a bad deal.”

Fox News reported on Sunday, citing an unnamed official of the US administration, that the contract is “95 percent complete.” However, the same source said, according to the media, that “we will not sign it today, nor tomorrow (Monday).” He also added that Trump wants to give Iran five to seven days to successfully complete the negotiations.
