Where Austria once planned to enter the nuclear age, sheep now graze in an unusual setting. Few places are as emblematic of Austria’s self-image as Zwentendorf in Lower Austria: When a nuclear power plant was built here in the 1970s, Zwentendorf was considered the center of local innovation, engineering and belief in progress. But as is well known, the nuclear power plant, which was completed but never put into operation, became a symbol of rare unity across society: Zwentendorf is a monument to Austria’s rejection of nuclear power.
