Motta defends maintaining a 14-month transition from 6 X 1

President of the Chamber says that deadline is “long awaited by the working class” and that meeting with Lula was “constructive”

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, (Republicanos-PB), stated this Tuesday (May 26, 2026) that he believes that the 14-month period for implementing the 40-hour work week in Brazil will not be modified. For the deputy, the deadline is fair.

I don’t believe in change in transition. I think the transition is fair. The working class has been waiting for this change for a long time“, said Motta in an interview with CNN Brazil.

The proposal report was released on Monday (May 25th) after an agreement between the Legislature and the government. Rapporteur Leo Prates (Republicanos-BA) proposed reducing the working day from 44 hours to 42 hours within 60 days after the promulgation of the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution in the National Congress. Then, after 12 months, there would be a reduction to 40 hours. Here is it (PDF – 527 KB).

According to Motta, the meeting with Lula was “quite constructive“. “In the end, convergence occurred in the vast majority of points“, he declared.
