Olhão City Council once again marks Fisherman’s Day, celebrated on May 31st, with a series of initiatives dedicated to sea professionals and the city’s historical connection with fishing and aquaculture.
The celebrations will take place next Sunday, at the Maria Barroso Municipal Auditorium, where “the men and women who contribute daily to one of the most emblematic sectors of Olhão’s identity will be honored”, says the municipality.
The program begins at 3pm with the lecture “Valuation and Sustainability of Shared Marine Resources – The Case of Tuna in Portugal”, an initiative dedicated to reflecting on “the importance of preserving marine resources and the sustainability of fishing activities”.
Tribute to sea professionals
At 4pm there will be a ceremony to award awards to professionals in the sector, recognizing the work and dedication of fishermen and other agents linked to the sea.
The celebrations end at 5pm with a tuna ronqueo demonstration and gastronomic tasting, providing the public with contact with traditions linked to the sea and local identity.
According to , Fisherman’s Day represents “an opportunity to value the role of fishing in the economy, culture and local identity” of a city historically linked to the Ria Formosa and the sea.
