Anthropic raised US$65 billion in an investment round, reaching a valuation of US$965 billion, according to an announcement made on the company’s official website. In this way, the founder of Claude surpassed that of ChatGPT and thus became the most valuable AI startup in the world.
OpenAI, which until then held the position, announced on April 1st, increasing the company’s market value to US$852 billion – consolidating itself, at the time, among the elite of global big tech.
It is worth remembering that the founders of Anthropic are former OpenAI employees who are unhappy with the pace of development and the security approach adopted by the creator of ChatGPT.
The round was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital. Capital Group, Coatue, D1 Capital Partners, GIC, Iconiq and XN also participated.
Since the investment round held in February, the startup reported that the adoption of Claude has continued to expand among global companies, while its annualized revenue surpassed the US$47 billion mark earlier this month.
According to Anthropic, the expectation is that this new investment will strengthen research in security and interpretability, increase computational capacity to meet the growing demand for Claude and expand essential products and partnerships for customers.
Significant investors in this round include AMP PBC, Baillie Gifford, Blackstone, Brookfield, DE Shaw Ventures, DST Global, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Insight Partners, Jane Street, Lightspeed Venture Partners, MGX, NTTVC, NX1 Capital, Situational Awareness LP, T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc., T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. and Temasek. The deal also includes $15 billion in “pre-committed” investments from hyperscale providers, including $5 billion from Amazon.
Together with them are strategic infrastructure partners — Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix —, also according to a publication on the Anthropic website.
