Meeting of leaders approves resolution that authorizes search for the name of the acronym while external negotiations remain open
The state directory of of Minas Gerais held a meeting with activists on Saturday (May 30, 2026) in Contagem, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte. It approved a resolution that opens the internal debate for the launch of its own candidacy for the State government in the 2026 elections. Behind the scenes, the party continues talking to names from other parties.
The move comes after the senator’s withdrawal (PSB), which was the president’s preferred name (PT) to lead the ticket in Minas.
The meeting, called “Lula for Minas and Gerais” and held at the Metalworkers Union, it brought together more than 1,500 state activists.
Names such as the national president of the PT, Edinho Silva, the state president of the party, deputy Leninha, the federal deputy Rogério Correia, the state deputy Bella Gonçalves, the former mayor of Contagem Marília Campos and the leader Éden Valadares were present.
The resolution approved by the state executive does not define a name, but directs the Electoral Working Group to consult party officials and conduct the candidacy construction process. Read (PDF – 125 KB).
Among the central points of the document are:
- the immediate opening of the internal debate;
- the reaffirmation of Marília Campos as a pre-candidate for the Senate;
- the commitment to expand the federal and state PT benches in Minas.
The text cites Pacheco’s departure as a motivator for the decision.
“It is unacceptable that, in May 2026, we are still waiting for names from outside the party to lead our transformation project in the state”says the document.
The resolution says that uncertainty strengthens opponents and weakens the democratic field.
The document also makes reference to foreign policy when criticizing the decision of the Donald Trump (Republican) government to include the PCC and the Red Command on the list of terrorist organizations in the United States. Classify the movement as “serious affront to national sovereignty”.
Despite the assertive tone, PT members from Minas Gerais say, in reserve, that the resolution does not conclude anything. It serves as pressure: either an agreement is reached, or the PT goes with its own name.
(PDT) remains as a hypothesis. Edinho met with the former mayor of Belo Horizonte also on Saturday (May 30). There are still obstacles in the relationship.
In addition to Kalil, the national president of the PT met with representatives of the PSB. Joshua Gomes da Silva (PSB), son of former vice-president José Alencar, and former attorney general Jarbas Soares are listed.
State president Leninha adopted caution regarding the PT’s candidacy for government. She stated that the scenario could weaken the party in the Chamber of Deputies, as names like Reginaldo Lopes and Rogério Correia – respectively the 4th and 5th most voted in the State in 2022 – could be displaced from the proportional dispute.
On social media, Edinho Silva mobilization and federal investments in Minas, but did not mention his own candidacy. He limited himself to saying that the party will “build a very strong platform for the re-election of President Lula, with Marília, pre-candidate for the Senate”.
Marília Campos, in turn, photo with Edinho and talked about the “next steps” of the pre-campaign for the Senate.
The uncertainty persists while the left field in MG searches for a viable alternative to face the Republican pre-candidate.
