“Paris is burning”. Around 22,000 agents were mobilized across the country to contain the violence involving PSG fans, who were celebrating the Champions League victory over Arsenal.
French authorities announced that 780 people were detained across the country during celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain’s victory over Arsenal in the Champions League final on Saturday night, marked by violent clashes and a road accident that killed a young man.
The man died in the early hours of Sunday after colliding with a motocross bike into concrete blocks, on the ramp of a Parisian circular exit. And beyond death, 219 injured were recorded as part of national celebrations, reported the Paris Prosecutor’s Office
Incidents were recorded in around 15 cities across the country. In Paris, thousands of people took to the streets to watch the game and celebrate the dramatic victory on penalties by the team of Portuguese internationals Vitinha (man of the match), João Neves, Nuno Mendes and Gonçalo Ramos, in a match played in the Hungarian capital of Budapest.
The situation was particularly tense around the Champs-Élysées avenue, where groups clashed with the police. Videos circulating on social media show vehicles on fire, barricades being erected and fireworks thrown at people.

Paris tram lines were interrupted, several metro stations were closed and bus traffic was suspended in some places, in an attempt to contain the disturbances.

The Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nunez, stated, during an interview, that 57 agents were injured and that there were “219 injured in France, including eight in serious condition”including a person injured with a sharp weapon who is in critical condition.
According to Nunez, the number of arrests represents a 32% increase in light of PSG’s Champions League title celebrations last year.
