Amstetten – A fatal fire on Monday night in an apartment in Amstetten was “very likely” caused by hot cigarette residue, according to the executive. Police spokesman Johann Baumschlager told the APA on Tuesday that an open flame, such as a tea light, could not be ruled out as triggering the fire. The Lower Austria State Criminal Police Office had determined the cause of the fire. The fatality was the 36-year-old resident. (APA, June 2, 2026)
