Febraban defends Pix after US commercial investigation

United States says that Brazil adopts “unfair practices” against North American companies; federation responds to criticism of the payment system

The (Brazilian Federation of Banks) issued, this Tuesday (June 2, 2026), a note defending Pix after the United States cited the system in a commercial investigation into “unfair practices” by Brazil. Read (PDF – 9.8 kB).

According to the report presented by the US government, Brazil had adopted measures considered harmful to US companies, including Pix. According to the document, the payment system created by the Central Bank would represent a form of state competition for private credit cards.

On Monday (June 1), the government of the President of the United States, (Republican Party), a 25% tariff on a wide list of products imported from Brazil, with the exception of items such as beef, coffee, rare earths, aeronautical equipment and some fruits and vegetables. Read the (PDF – 915 kB).

What does Febraban say?

In response, Febraban stated that the tool developed by the Central Bank is a “payment infrastructure, and not a commercial product, that favors competition and the smooth functioning of the payments system. It is an open and non-discriminatory model, with the participation of banks, fintechs, national and foreign financial institutions. There is no restriction on the entry of new participants, of any size or segment of the financial industry, as long as they operate in the national market, as it is a local payment system and in reais”.

Finally, the organization stated that it has “good expectations” about what “BCB’s contributions [Banco Central do Brasil] and members of the Brazilian banking system, including American banks, will help clarify the conclusions of the American trade body”.
