Storm causes landslide in Japan and blocks train line

A landslide caused by heavy rain from tropical storm Jangmi flooded a section of the train line in Shizuoka prefecture, in central Japan, this Wednesday (3).

According to local media reports, the Kawazu city fire department received calls from a resident reporting a landslide in the region at around 11am (local time).

A section of the Izu Kyuko coastal line was affected, although train services had already been suspended since Tuesday (2). A nearby electrical power transmission line was also partially damaged by debris.

The storm has already left almost 60,000 homes without power, and authorities have received reports of flooding, falling trees and debris, as well as landslides across a vast area, government spokesman Minoru Kihara said during a daily press conference.

Evacuation orders were issued to hundreds of thousands of residents in eight prefectures in southwestern, central and eastern Japan.
