US President Donald Trump said Iran has agreed not to have nuclear weapons and would likely meet Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei at some point if things “go well”.
“They have already agreed that they are not going to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump declared on the podcast “Pod Force One” in an interview broadcast on Wednesday, when talking about Iran.
Asked about Khamenei’s involvement in negotiations with the US to end hostilities, Trump said: “He’s involved, for sure… I think they have a lot of respect for him.”
Trump said he heard the Iranian leader was not doing very well but was giving his approval during the talks. Trump added that he did not have “the privilege of meeting” with Khamenei.
“I’d like to meet with him. We’ll probably meet at some point, depending on how everything plays out,” Trump said.
The US president said he considers the war with Iran a success because the country’s armed forces were defeated. The conflict, which began with joint US-Israeli attacks on February 28, has destabilized the global energy market and proved unpopular with Americans months before November’s midterm elections.

“Iran is a great success,” Trump declared in the interview. “We’ll see what happens. We’re working on a deal, and if that happens, great. If it doesn’t, that’s fine too. We’ll do it another way.”
He did not specify what that might mean, but has said in the past that the US would resume attacks.
