Allies of the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), have said that the Civil Police operation investigating the administration is the result of a “fight” between Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) and the category.

Management members interviewed by the column highlight what they call “bad relationship” between the governor of São Paulo and the Civil Police and “dissatisfaction” in the sector, since Tarcísio would have made greater nods to the Military Police throughout his term.

According to City Hall interlocutors, all documents requested by the investigation had already been provided to the Police before the operation. “The operation was designed to be a media stunt. It had no reason to be”, explained one. Another argument used is that the request for investigation came from Leonardo Carvalho Bastos, full member of the Ethics Council of the PT of Sapucaia do Sul, in Rio Grande do Sul, and therefore, would have a political nature, with the aim of harming Tarcísio’s allies on the eve of the election.

Tarcísio’s interlocutors, however, reject this interpretation. For them, the actions of the Civil Police demonstrate that the investigations are not subject to political interference. This Tuesday (2), Tarcísio defended the autonomy of the Civil Police when asked about Nunes’ speech, who said that, if the action carried out occurred because of the film Dark Horse, it was political persecution. “The police have autonomy to carry out their investigations, to carry out their operations. It is a State institution”, said the governor.

The column found that the mayor and governor spoke about the matter after the operation. Nunes called Tarcísio, who confirmed that he had no prior knowledge of the operation.

Tarcísio and Nunes are known for their strong rapprochement. Ties became closer in the 2024 election, when the governor played a central role in the mayor’s re-election. The two often exchange compliments and participate in many joint activities.
