The Volta System began to change the way consumers deal with some beverage packaging, but it also raised doubts. One of the most repeated on social media is whether anyone who buys a bottle or can in a supermarket is forced to return to the same store to recover the deposit amount.
The answer is not as linear as some publications suggest. According to the website specializing in technology and current affairs, which analyzed the issue, packaging covered by the system can be returned at any Volta Point or Volta Kiosk, regardless of where they were purchased. Confusion arises especially when the consumer chooses the method of reimbursement.
You can return it to another point Volta
The system does not force the consumer to return to the store where they purchased the package. If the bottle or can is covered by the program, it can be delivered to a participating collection point as long as it meets the necessary conditions to be accepted.
According to the official website of the Volta program, the covered packages can be returned at Volta Points, normally associated with automatic machines, or at Volta Kiosks, depending on the available network. The objective is to facilitate the collection and encourage the return of single-use packaging.
Pplware highlights that this is the essential part to dismantle an idea that has been circulating online: it is not true that the consumer needs to return to the supermarket where they made the purchase to deliver the package.
The difference is in the refund
The point that has generated the most doubts is how the money is recovered. The program provides for various forms of reimbursement, including a voucher convertible into cash, a store discount voucher, a loyalty card or a donation to a cause.
However, when the consumer chooses a discount voucher in store, the use of this value may depend on the commercial policy of the chain where the return was made. In some cases, the receipt can only be used at the store where the packages were delivered. In others, it may be accepted in any store within the same chain.
This is where the confusion arises. The return can be made at any participating point, but the use of the voucher may be limited to the establishment or chain in question, depending on the applicable rules.
What was confirmed to SIC
According to the Pplware website, SDR Portugal confirmed to SIC that, in practice, the refund may be limited to the establishment where the bottles were delivered, information that was also confirmed by the Ministry of the Environment, after a different initial note.
Still, this limitation does not mean that the system forces the consumer to return to the supermarket where they purchased. It just means that, if you choose a certain form of refund, you may have to use the amount at the place where you made the return or within the conditions defined by that chain.
Therefore, choosing the type of reimbursement becomes important. Anyone who wants to avoid limitations associated with discount vouchers should check in advance which options are available at their chosen collection point.
It is not a forced loan
The allegation that the Volta System works as a “forced loan” has been circulating on social media, but it does not correspond to the operation explained by Pplware. The deposit paid at the time of purchase can be recovered when the package is returned to a participating point.
The deposit amount works as an incentive to return and not as a definitive cost, as long as the consumer delivers the package under the expected conditions. To do this, the packaging must be covered by the system, maintain the necessary identification elements and be accepted at the collection point.
The practical difference is between returning the package and using the amount received. The first operation can be done at any Volta point. The second depends on the reimbursement method chosen and the operator’s rules.
It’s a good idea to know the rules before choosing
For consumers, the main recommendation is simple: before choosing the type of refund, it is worth confirming where the voucher can be used and whether there is an alternative convertible into cash. If the intention is to shop in the same space, the store discount voucher may be sufficient. But if the objective is to recover the value without being tied to a specific store, it will be important to see if the collection point allows another method.
The Volta System does not require you to return packages to the supermarket where they were purchased. However, in the case of discount vouchers, the money recovered may be conditioned on the location where the return was made.
