A delegation of Brazilian parliamentarians aligned with the government is in the United States to discuss the relationship between the two countries. The group’s main focus is imposition of new American tariffs on Brazil.
In an interview with CNN Behind the Scenes this Thursday (4), Pedro Campos (PSB-PE) evaluated the scenario found by and argued that there is no technical basis that justifies the measures.
Campos explained that the current situation differs from the previous round of tariffs, which had been overturned by the US Supreme Court. “Now comes this new wave of tariffs based on section 301. This is new in relation to legal form that this is being processed,” he stated.
According to him, the delegation’s understanding is that the measure continues without legal basis and has a clear political motivation. “Desire is, in fact, influence Brazil’s elections and there is no technical justification for these tariffs to be imposed on the Brazilian people”, he declared.
Meetings with parliamentarians and international organizations
According to the deputy, the Brazilian delegation held meetings with representatives of the Organization of American States (OAS) and with US Congressmen from the Democratic Party.
“Several of them have already acted in relation to the first tariffs, mainly because this is an issue that also concerns the American people. We see here the crisis that exists in relation to the cost of living“, highlighted Campos.
In addition to tariffs, the delegation raised the issue of international cooperation in combating organized crime. Pedro Campos cited the case of the businessman Ricardo Magrofrom the Refit group, investigated in Operation Hidden Carbon.
“The Brazilian authorities have been demanding support from the American authorities for more than a year so that he can be arrested, because he already has preventive detention ordered in Brazil and an Interpol alert has already been placed against him,” he reported.
Dark Horse
Another central point raised by the delegation was a request for North American parliamentarians to ask the Department of Justice and the FBI to, under the justification of finance the production of the film Dark Horse.
“The producer herself said that [os valores] did not make it into the production of the film. There is a suspicion of money laundering, a suspicion that resources are being misused, which come from Banco Master fraud”, stated the deputy.
Pedro Campos reported that the Democratic parliamentarians with whom the delegation spoke were “very impressed” upon becoming aware of the values involved in the Master case.
“There is a concern, when we show the size of the figures and the relationship that exists between the Trump government and the Bolsonaro family, that this could not become a corruption scandal also here within the government itself”, he concluded.
