In his essay for Sight & Sound magazine, Quentin Tarantino (63) took a sharp dig at contemporary Hollywood. The three-time Oscar winner said that today he considers watching new movies almost an ordeal, but at the same time he singled out one film that really caught his eye in recent years.
Filmmaker called Hollywood production a “disgusting sausage factory” and criticized, in his own words, pandering to the audience, inappropriate casting of actors and other shortcomings of modern films. “Flaws, improbable situations, pandering to the audience, poorly cast actors, or just plain stupid nonsense usually sink every new movie that comes out of that disgusting sausage factory that used to call itself Hollywood.” wrote.
Nevertheless, he admitted that one film this year managed to captivate him from start to finish. It is a crime thriller The Rip, which premiered on Netflix this year in January and it featured Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in the main roles.
“There’s a new thriller that really grabbed my attention and held my attention throughout. It’s a gripping police thriller with an under-the-radar theme that manages to live up to its potential in some really smart ways.” wrote Tarantino and also praised the director Joe Carnahan, the screenplay, the cinematographer Juan Miguel Azpiroz and the cast.
According to Tarantino, the film worked as a whole. At the same time, the director admitted that contemporary cinematography can no longer absorb him the way it used to. In addition to the film Rana, he also mentioned among the newer titles that he liked the 2021 musical West Side Story and Kevin Costner’s Westerns Horizon: An American Saga and Horizon: An American Saga 2. “I’d rather read a book these days,” Tarantino added.
