João Fonseca will appear as 25th in the world rankings to be released by the ATP (Association of Professional Tennis Players) next Monday. The Brazilian tennis player will also be number 1 in South America, surpassing Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, who will fall one place (he will be 27th).
The tennis player from Rio ran the risk of finishing Roland Garros as 26th in the rankings if the Italian Matteo Arnaldi advanced to the final.
But Arnaldi, suffering from a virus, didn’t even enter the court this Friday (5) to face his compatriot Flavio Cobolli (now 10th in the world).
Fonseca’s campaign, which ended in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, saw him gain five positions in the rankings. Thus, he will be very close to his best mark (24th, in November last year). Until Wimbledon (which starts on June 29th), the Rio native will have few points to defend. In 2025, he fell in his debut in Halle, Germany, and in the second round in Eastbourne (England). In last year’s London Grand Slam he advanced to the third round. The three tournaments are played on grass.
Arnaldi will jump 70 places in the world rankings and will be 34th. Fonseca’s tormentor, the Czech Jakub Mensik, was eliminated by the German Alexander Zverev, third in the world rankings, this Friday, by 3 sets to 1, with partials of 7/5, 6/2, 3/6 and 6/3. The fall in the semifinals will see Mensik jump from 27th to 16th place.
The decision between Zverev and Cobolli will be on Sunday. The two never won a Grand Slam.
Among the top 10, two changes are certain. Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime will move up two positions and be fourth. And Cobolli will be among the top ten for the first time, taking Kazakh Alexander Bublik out of the top ten group.
The top three will remain unchanged: Jannik Sinner, from Italy, Carlos Alcaraz, from Spain, and Zverev.
