The American doctor who was treated in a Berlin hospital after contracting the virus while in the Democratic Republic of Congo was discharged earlier today. “I received first-class care,” he said.
The 39-year-old doctor has been in quarantine for two weeks in the special isolation ward of the Berlin Charité University Hospital and, as announced, is in good health and as of May 30, the virus has not been detected in his blood.
In accordance with international protocols, the competent health authority lifted his isolation order today. His wife and four children arrived in Berlin a few days later = and were classified as “high-risk contacts”, but were asymptomatic and quarantined in a separate section of the hospital. Today they were also discharged.
“I received first class care”
The patient himself warmly thanked the hospital team: “I received first-class care, including experimental treatments that are currently being tested to treat viruses of this type. My gratitude cannot be adequately described in words,” he said, adding that his thoughts are with the people in the Congo who are unable to receive such care.
The doctor was working in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has recently been hit by a new outbreak of Ebola, and was flown to Berlin on May 20 under tight security. He was treated in the special isolation ward of the Virchow Clinic, in which the necessary isolation conditions are ensured.
In fact, according to the federal Ministry of Health, it was absolutely clear that there was no danger to the public or other patients, while the appropriate measures were taken to protect the staff.
