The billion-dollar hole left in the public coffers by the Korean steel company Posco will be the subject of debate this week. The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday (9) at the Economic Development Commission.
the matter became a concern after the court ordered the company to pay a debt of R$1 billion left after the construction of Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém, in Ceará.
It is only entitled to receive around R$40 million. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, , wants to reach an agreement through dialogue and has held talks with the company’s creditors.
Members of the Brazilian government, companies, entities and the International Association of Posco Creditors (IAPC) were invited to the hearing at the Chamber.
The association and the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services have already confirmed their presence. The meeting was requested by deputies Luiz Gastão (PSDB-CE) and Moses Rodrigues (União-CE).
The objective of the meeting is to discuss the fiscal impact on the state of Ceará and the Union, in addition to the damage to Brazilian companies.
In the request, Gastão stated that the hearing could provide inspections and possible legislative initiatives.
“In addition to the tax impacts, dozens of Brazilian companies were harmed, some leading to the closure of activities. There are also questions about the fairness of the self-bankruptcy request, the company’s financial transactions in Brazil and the possible responsibility of the original contracting company”, says the document.
The new chapters of the scandal occur amid Brazil’s commercial rapprochement with . In February, the countries signed agreements and a broad trade agreement.
