With no Italian Championship titles in its history, Atalanta saw for the first time a player from its squad reinforce the Brazilian team in a World Cup with the call-up of Éderson this Sunday (7).
Owner of five Serie B titles and one Coppa Italia (62/63), the club has stood out in recent years and achieved places in the Champions League, even displacing giants such as Juventus and Milan. In 2024, he won the Europa League for the first time, the second most important interclub tournament on the continent.
With the call-up of midfielder Éderson to replace right-back Wesley, who was injured this Sunday, Atalanta joins other Italian clubs without much recent tradition and who have already transferred athletes to Brazil in World Cups.
Examples are Parma (2002), Reggiana (1994) and Udinese (1986).
FOREIGN LEADERS
Wesley’s cut slightly changed the ranking of teams that gave the most players to Brazil in World Cups.
With the departure of the injured right-back, Roma now have lent players to Brazil in six different World Cup editions, leaving Real Madrid isolated in second place among foreign clubs with 7.
WRITING
Barcelona and Real Madrid kept the writing and are the only clubs in the world that gave players to Brazil in all the World Cups of the millennium.
Barça, in fact, is going to the ninth consecutive World Cup reinforcing the team. Since 1994, with Romário, the Catalan club has had at least one player called up. In this edition it was striker Raphinha.
Real are on the back foot. There is an athlete called up by Brazil’s coaches since 1998.
Despite being the foreign clubs that have reinforced the Brazilian team in World Cups in the most editions, Spanish rivals are still far from being the main providers.
Flamengo is the club that has seen the most players in different World Cups. The Red and Black team only had no athlete called up by a coach in five editions (1962, 1998, 2006, 2014 and 2018) out of a total of 23.
Botafogo is second. It has 17 appearances in World Cups, leaving São Paulo alone in third place, with 16.
Following them both are Corinthians and Fluminense, with 15 players each present in the 23 editions.
