“Guga” is sentenced to 20 years for stabbing his ex-wife to death

Crime was committed in Praça Marquês de Pombal, in Setúbal

The Setúbal Court sentenced a man, of Brazilian nationality, who stabbed his ex-girlfriend to 20 years in prison. The additional penalty of expulsion from national territory was also applied.

The crime occurred on the day June 16, 2025inside the suspect’s barbershop, in Praça Marquês de Pombal, in Setúbal. Gustavo Maciel, 26 years old, was convicted, at the end of May, of qualified homicide.

After committing the crime, he walked to the PSP police station near the barbershop and handed himself in. Maciel confessed to the murder and took the agents to the scene of the crime.

According to , the defendant and Iranilcy Oliveira they had gotten married in 2018, had been separated since 2014 and had already started a family. After the victim informed him of a new relationship, the accused struck her torso and neck several times, leaving her with several injuries.

Aid resources were also added but, despite resuscitation maneuvers, the victim continued to have no vital signs and the death was declared at the scene.

Present at the Setúbal Court, the “Spring“, as he was known, he was held in preventive detention and was tried for qualified homicide (for which he was convicted) and domestic violence, of which he was acquitted. The prosecution also asked that the man was expelled from Portugalwhich the court ended up decreeing.

The court considered the evidence presented by the prosecution as decisive for the conviction. Among the key elements were testimonies from neighbors and familywho reported previous episodes of violence and threats.

This case highlights the importance of addressing and preventing domestic violence, highlighting the need for protection and support mechanisms for victims. In Setúbal, local authorities and organizations continue working to raise awareness of this social problem.
