Free digital driving license generates savings of R$51 million in SP – 06/11/2026 – Panel

It has generated savings of R$51.3 million for São Paulo citizens since its implementation last month.

According to data from Detran in São Paulo, linked to the Tarcísio de Freitas (Republican) government, 372,324 people issued the document exclusively digitally, without printing on paper, which eliminates the related costs.

Of the total saved, R$47.2 million comes from not issuing physical versions of the driver’s license and R$4.1 million from eliminating the costs of sending the printed document.

Currently, citizens who take their first license pay only R$105.66 for scheduling fees for theoretical and practical exams.

Furthermore, the theoretical course is free, the minimum mandatory load of practical classes has been reduced and the candidate can choose between a driving school or an accredited independent instructor.

“Our objective is to make licensing more compatible with the citizen’s reality. Digital transformation allows us to eliminate costs, while at the same time increasing each driver’s freedom of choice. We are simplifying processes without compromising the security of services”, says Talita Rodrigues, director of Qualification and Drivers at Detran-SP.

In recent months, with the election calendar approaching, measures to make life easier for drivers have also been adopted by the federal government.
