New York continues to get into the World Cup spirit and temporarily renamed two streets in honor of Thierry Henry and Pelé before the start of the tournament, this Thursday (11).
The city council’s decision was celebrated by several people between 50th West Street and Sixth Avenuein the heart of Manhattan, to accompany the unveiling of the “Thierry Henry Way” sign.
“Today, New York City pays tribute to one of the greatest players of all time,” wrote Councilwoman Virginia Maloney on Instagram.
Henry, world champion with the French team in 1998, appeared in a video on the councilor’s social network thanking the city and its mayor, Zohran Mamdani, “a true Arsenal fan, as we all know“.
“My family will be very honored,” added the 48-year-old Frenchman, who gained notoriety in the United States after defendingr five seasons with the New York Red Bulls, from MLS, until 2014.
The city also temporarily changed the name of the intersection between Shea Road and Meridian Road in the borough of Queens, in honor of King Pelé, who was a player for the New York Cosmos between 1975 and 1977.
Os Street names will be maintained until November 1st.
