Dutch police are investigating an accident in which a car crashed into a group of pupils on a school cycling trip in the southern province of Zeeland on Thursday. “A group of 14 children and two leaders on bicycles were hit by a car during a school trip,” local authorities said. The accident occurred near the village of Vogelwaarde near the Belgian border. Two children and one adult died at the scene of the accident. Four other children suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospitals in the Netherlands and neighboring Belgium. One of the children subsequently succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Rotterdam.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident, which occurred on a provincial road leading through an agricultural area. A photo published in Dutch media shows a car with a broken windshield and a damaged hood in a field next to the road. Accidents of this type are not common in the Netherlands.
