Workers’ Struggle Day: Laerte and Aurélio Peres honored – 06/14/2026 – Panel

The cartoonist and former federal deputy Aurélio Peres will receive the José Martinez trophy at the celebration of Workers’ Struggle Day, on July 9, in São Paulo. The tribute was unanimously approved by trade union centrals and memory institutions of the labor movement, including the CUT (Central Única dos Trabalhadores) and Força Sindical.

Laerte is awarded for her work as a cartoonist at the São Paulo Metalworkers Union, the São Bernardo do Campo Metalworkers Union and Oboré Editorial. Peres was a federal deputy for the MDB in the 1970s, when he was a clandestine member of the PCdoB.

Workers’ Struggle Day has been celebrated on July 9 since 2017, by municipal law authored by then councilor Antonio Donato (PT), in memory of the 1917 General Strike. The trophy is a bust of José Martinez, a 21-year-old shoemaker who was shot dead by Public Force soldiers on July 9 of that year, during a demonstration in Brás.

The ceremony will take place at the headquarters of Sindpd (Data Processing Workers Union), at Avenida Angélica, 35, in Santa Cecília. Waldemar Rossi, Celia Rossi, Nair Goulart, Idibal Pivetta and ; Paulo Canabrava and José Maria de Almeida will have recognition plaques. The costs are covered by the unions.
