Curaçao’s World Cup debut ended with a rout defeat to Germany. The Caribbean team was beaten 7-1 — the same score as the historic German victory over Brazil in the World Cup semi-final, at Mineirão, in 2014.
See below how the international press reported the match.
THE GUARDIAN (INGLATERRA)
The English newspaper highlighted Curaçao’s debut, but also pointed out that “Havertz and ruthless Germany show no mercy”. The report highlighted that just competing in the World Cup is already a great achievement for the Caribbean country and that advancing in group E, also made up of Ivory Coast and Ecuador, would be an even more extraordinary feat.
“The mere fact that they were there, celebrated enthusiastically at a launch party near the city center the night before, was enough for most,” the paper said.
OLÉ (ARGENTINA)
The vehicle noted that the four-time world champions defeated the Caribbean team convincingly and are candidates for the cup. “This time it was against the debutant and modest Curaçao, but no team should want to face this formidable force”, assessed the publication.
“This resounding victory not only guarantees Germany their first three points of the tournament, it also sends a powerful message to the rest of the competition: the Bavarian machine is well-oiled, physically and mentally strong enough to break ties and mercilessly punish any lapse in concentration from their opponents.”
BRAND (SPAIN)
He bet on the title “From miracle to massacre! Havertz ends Curaçao’s historic dream in a seven-goal rout”. The Spanish newspaper highlighted the German player’s performance.
THE TEAM (FRENCH)
For the French newspaper, “the game went without major difficulties, as expected”. The surprise was the goal from Dick Advocaat’s team, coach of the Curaçao national team, which bothered Julian Nagelsmann and his players for approximately 15 minutes — the time it took for Germany to break the tie and return to the lead with a header from Schlotterbeck.
LA GAZETTA DELL’SPORT (ITALY)
The Italian report said that the German team was surprised by the goal from Comenencia, number 8 — the only Curaçao player to score in the game. The newspaper also assessed that the German victory keeps the Europeans away from early eliminations, such as those in 2018, in Russia, and 2022, in Qatar, and reinforces that the Europeans are candidates for the title.
“The attack by Caribbean pirates on Germany’s flagship lasted as long as a well-aimed cannon shot at the main mast, and the ship of Captain Advocaat, who became the oldest coach in the history of the World Cup at the age of 78, sank with his entire crew.”
