The result came after a 0.5% change in March; compared to April 2025, retail sales volume grew 1.0%
The volume fell 1.5% in April 2026 compared to March, in the seasonally adjusted series, reported the (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) this Tuesday (June 16, 2026). The result interrupts a 3-month sequence of growth in the sector.
With the drop, the quarterly moving average remained stable (0.0%) in the quarter ended in April, after the increase of 0.7% recorded in the quarter ended in March.
Compared to April 2025, retail sales volume grew 1.0%, below the 4.0% increase recorded in March. In 2026, the sector grew 2.0%. In 12 months, the expansion is 1.5%.
Nominal retail revenue grew 1.1% from March to April. Compared to the same month in 2025, it increased 4.2%. Year-to-date, it rose 4.2%, while the increase in 12 months totaled 5.1%.
Of the 8 activities surveyed by IBGE, 6 recorded a drop in April compared to March.
The biggest declines were recorded in fuels and lubricants (-6.2%), other articles for personal and domestic use (-4.6%) and office, IT and communication equipment and material (-4.5%).
Furniture and household appliances (-0.8%), fabrics, clothing and footwear (-0.1%) and pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (-0.1%) also had negative results.
The only increases came from hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.3%) and books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (1.1%).
In expanded retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, construction materials and specialized wholesale in food products, beverages and tobacco, sales volume fell 0.7% in April compared to March, after stability (0.0%) recorded in the previous month.
The quarterly moving average of extended retail changed 0.1% in the quarter ended in April, after the increase of 0.6% recorded in the quarter ended in March.
In comparison with April 2025, expanded retail increased 1.4%, below the 6.5% growth recorded in March. The indicator accumulates an increase of 1.8% in the year and 0.2% in the last 12 months.
Among expanded retail activities, vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces fell 0.7% in April, while construction material fell 3.6%.
The (Monthly Trade Survey) monitors the economic evolution of retail trade and expanded retail trade across the country and is published monthly by IBGE.
