  • France is facing a heat wave that is gradually spreading across the country.
  • Temperatures reached 37 degrees in some places, and may exceed 40 at the weekend.
  • A heat warning is in effect for Thursday around Paris and the east.
  • In Paris, they allowed swimming in the Saint-Martin canal under the supervision of lifeguards.
  • The city invested over a billion euros in cleaning the Seine before the Olympics.

Temperatures reached 37 degrees Celsius in some places on Wednesday. It is expected that they could reach around 40 °C in several parts of the country by Sunday. A warning against high temperatures was announced for Thursday for the vicinity of Paris and most of the eastern part of the country.

Authorities in the capital have allowed swimming under the supervision of lifeguards on one section of the canal in the Canal Saint-Martin section east of the city center since Wednesday afternoon. They took the same step during the heat last month.

“Expending a huge amount of energy, deploying the city and national police to prevent young people from swimming when it was 40 degrees … we found it a bit absurd,” said the mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire.

People will also be able to cool off in the summer on some sections of the Seine River. In the summer of a year ago, it was again made available to swimmers for the first time in the past century. Paris has invested more than a billion euros to clean it up before the 2024 Olympics.
