Eduardo Bolsonaro calls for resumption of sanctions against Moraes after conviction in the STF

Former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro asked US President Donald Trump to resume sanctions against Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Jair Bolsonaro’s son was sentenced on Tuesday, 16, for coercion during the coup plot process. The court ordered a prison sentence of four years and two months, in a semi-open regime, and a fine of R$165,000.

“President Trump, please take Magnitsky back,” Eduardo said in a video published on X. Moraes was already sanctioned under the Magnitsky Act last year, but Trump backed down months later.

In the recording, Eduardo appears speaking in English, inside a car, and claims to be in Dallas, Texas.

In the text of the post, he reiterates the request. “Please reimpose sanctions against this authoritarian figure. The same people who persecute me today also despise everything your administration stands for: freedom of expression, democracy and the rule of law.”

Eduardo claims to be unaware of the details of the process, saying that everything he knows comes from the press and social media, as he would not have been subpoenaed in the United States. He also claims to be the victim of persecution due to his relationship with American authorities.

Furthermore, the former deputy stated that he will be amnestied, as will Jair Bolsonaro, if his brother, Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), is elected.

“We are going to elect Flávio Bolsonaro president of Brazil in October to restore our good relationship not only with the United States, but with democracies around the world”, he states.

To justify the request for sanctions, Eduardo lists a series of actions by Moraes: the freezing of Starlink accounts in Brazil, the detention of American advisor Jason Miller at the airport and the issuing of warrants against American citizens who published on X from US territory. He also recalled the decision of the Italian court on the extradition of Carla Zambelli.

Eduardo’s statements occurred on the same day that Donald Trump, during the G7 summit, spoke about the conviction.

“I heard that they arrested someone who is running for office today. I just said goodbye to him and I heard that they arrested Bolsonaro Jr. He was doing well in the polls and they arrested him because he made a statement in Texas. They arrested him, or they want to arrest him,” he said.

Trump got confused with the names of President Jair Bolsonaro’s children. The person competing, in fact, is Flávio. Eduardo is the one who was sentenced to prison. There is no “Bolsonaro Jr”.

The American president also said that Brazil is “politically dangerous”. The speech provoked a reaction from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). “For me, he can continue to like Bolsonaro, his father, his son, his grandson, after all, taste can’t be discussed. Just don’t get involved in Brazil’s elections, because Brazil’s elections are Brazil’s problem,” said the PT member.
