Unit will serve 1.3 million people; resources will be allocated to maintenance, equipment and works in a complex with 198 beds
The president (PT) inaugurated this Friday (June 19, 2026) the HU-UFSJ (University Hospital of the Federal University of São João del-Rei), in Divinópolis (MG). The unit should serve more than 1.3 million people.
The federal government will allocate R$341 million per year to maintain the hospital. Of this total, R$230 million will come from the Ministry of Education and R$111 million will be transferred by the Ministry of Health for operational costs. Another R$85 million was allocated to the purchase of equipment.
“There is no return in this country. Either we invest in education and health, or we find a way to make things happen in this country, or the poor people will continue to suffer a lot”said Lula.
According to the president, investing in areas such as education and health can be challenging, but “the role of a ruler is not to stop at a problem; the role of a ruler is to challenge the problem and find a solution”.
At the same ceremony, the Ministry of Transport announced two infrastructure measures for the region:
- the launch of the electronic auction for works to adapt the urban crossing of Divinópolis on BR-494/MG, with an investment of R$ 19.5 million from Novo PAC. The opening of proposals will be on July 30th;
- authorization for the duplication of BR-262 in the section between Nova Serrana and Bom Despacho.
Lula also stated that, if the Municipality of Divinópolis expropriates an area close to the Federal University of São João del-Rei, the federal government will be able to invest in the expansion of the institution.
