Trump criticizes Meloni and alleges the Italian’s low popularity amid the controversy

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, criticized this Saturday (20) the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, claiming that the Italian’s popularity is at a low point “because she refused the US request to prevent Iran from obtaining or developing a nuclear weapon”.

“It didn’t even allow us to use the Italian airstrips, a huge logistical inconvenience, despite the fact that the US contributes hundreds of billions of dollars a year to protect Italy and other North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social, this Saturday.

Trump even suggested that, after what he called the “military defeat of Iran by the United States”, Meloni “wants to be friends” with Washington again to increase his approval ratings. “No, thank you!!!”, he added.

False statements

The Republican’s comment comes after Meloni said that Trump’s statements that she had with him during the recent G7 Summit – which she claimed again today – are “completely false” and said that she is “stunned” by the American leader’s type of statement.

The situation caused the Italian government to criticize the United States, its historical ally, and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to cancel his planned trip to the United States this weekend.
