Russian drones attacked two civilian ships in the Black Sea on Thursday night, causing one death and five injuries, Ukrainian authorities announced this Friday.
“As a result of an attack with Russian drones against civilian ships in the Black Sea, a crew member of a ship flying the Panamanian flag died and two other sailors were injured, one of them seriously,” Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksi Kuleba said on Telegram.
Three sailors from another vessel, which was flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis, were also slightly injured, the official added.
The bombings occurred when both ships “departed from Ukrainian ports,” said the governor of the Odessa region, Oleg Kiper. After the attack, “they resumed their journey,” he said.
The Odessa region and its port infrastructure have been frequently targeted by Russia since its large-scale invasion of Ukrainein February 2022.
This invasion has become the worst armed conflict on European soil since World War II, and has left thousands dead on both sides.
