On a Greek island A large-scale forest fire broke out in Euboea on Saturday, as a result of which the local authorities ordered preventive evacuations. The strong wind drove the flames towards populated areas. The DPA agency reports that this is the first major forest fire in Greece this year, writes TASR.
The fire broke out in the afternoon near two villages in the southern part of the island and firefighters urged residents to leave the area. According to media reports, approx 120 firefighters, 35 fire trucks, seven helicopters and eight airplanes.
A strong wind also contributed to the spread of the fire, which is expected to continue on Sunday as well. The island of Euboea has also been affected by extensive forest fires in the past. The fire in 2021 destroyed tens of thousands of hectares of forest and still represents one of the worst disasters in its history.
